Final Fantasy 14’s Hrothgar and Viera Finally Get Proper Headgear in Patch 7.3

For years, Final Fantasy 14’s Hrothgar and Viera players have endured a fashion crisis—unable to properly wear most headgear due to their unique feline and bunny ears. But now, Square Enix has announced a long-awaited fix. During the latest Letter from the Producer Live stream, the developers confirmed that Patch 7.3 will finally expand headgear options for these races, ending a six-year limitation.

A Long-Overdue Change

Since their introduction in the Shadowbringers expansion (2019), Hrothgar and Viera have faced restricted headgear compatibility. Their distinct ear structures—cat-like for Hrothgar and rabbit-like for Viera—meant many helmets and hats either clipped awkwardly or were disabled entirely. While Square Enix initially cited technical challenges, player demand for proper customization has persisted.

Patch 7.3, The Promise of Tomorrow, will address this at last. The update ensures most headgear will now display correctly, with further adjustments (including full helmet support) planned for future patches. Fans are especially hopeful this includes paid cosmetic items, which have been largely inaccessible to these races.

Patch 7.3: More Than Just Hats

While headgear fixes stole the spotlight, the stream revealed several major additions:

  • Main Scenario Quest: The conclusion to Dawntrail’s storyline.
  • New Dungeon & Raid: The level 100 Meso Terminal dungeon and 24-player alliance raid San d’Oria: The Second Walk.
  • New Trials: An unnamed battle with Normal/Extreme difficulties, plus an Unreal Trial against Seiryu in The Wreath of Snakes.
  • Deep Dungeon: Pilgrim’s Traverse, a new challenge for solo and group play.

A Victory for Player Expression

The headgear update marks a win for community persistence. For Hrothgar and Viera players, it’s more than cosmetic—it’s about equal access to the game’s fashion-driven endgame. As Yoshida noted, “unique races require unique solutions,” and Square Enix is finally delivering.

Final Fantasy 14 Online is available on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, PC, and Mac. Patch 7.3 launches in early August.
